Our review of Talitha Sunrise Coffee – in support of survivors of childhood exploitation.

Many thanks to Jenny Barber and the team at Talitha Coffee.

Before we review the coffee itself, a few words about Talitha Coffee and its mission.

Their mission is to support survivors of sex trafficking.

Jenny, a survivor herself, works with her team to hire sex trafficking survivors and create workplaces that are supportive and designed to help survivors thrive.

Their work extends beyond employing survivors in their coffee business. They also help with housing, food, clothing, and more. Their aim is to create a safe and sustainable path to a better future.

I can only imagine the courage it takes to raise your hand, declare yourself a survivor of exploitation, and then find the strength to live a life with hope as your North Star.

Every bag of Talitha coffee you buy supports this mission.

As a father of 5 and grandfather of 8, I can’t think of a worthier or more important cause than protecting our children against exploitation.

And I love that they chose coffee as the foundation on which to build their cause. The growing, processing, roasting, and drinking of coffee have always been grounded in care, cooperation, and conversation.

Now let’s take a look at one of their coffees.

Our review of the Talitha Sunrise Signature Blend

Sometimes, when coffee is being roasted and sold in support of a cause, the quality of the coffee itself takes a back seat. Understandable.

But this isn’t the case with Talitha. Talitha Coffee Roasters is certified by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA).

In other words, the quality of the coffee they roast is aligned with their broader mission. If you’re going to help rebuild lives, do it on a foundation of care, quality, and excellence.

Now onto our tasting…

As always, we ground the coffee beans just before brewing. Then we brewed a pot in a simple drip brewer. Nothing fancy.

We poured a cup and let it cool for a minute or two before tasting.

This is a medium roast blend, so we didn’t expect anything too dramatic or too light. But after tasting it, I’d guess this is at the high end of medium.

Why? Because this is a bold coffee with some strength. Excellent for that first coffee of the day.

On the bag, it talks about milk chocolate. But again, we felt a little different… like it was nudging towards dark chocolate, with a hint of delicious chocolate bitterness. And yes, a little caramel and nuts.

Overall, we really liked this coffee and will miss it when the last bean has been ground and brewed.

Hats off to the Talitha roasters.
